Choosing a door for your home can be an unexpectedly difficult decision. The door is the gateway to your home so it needs to give off the right first impression, which is where we can help. Over the last 20 years, composite doors have become more and more popular but does that mean we should forget about uPVC? Here’s all the things you need to know to make the right choice.
uPVC stands for unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, sounds complicated, doesn’t it? But it doesn’t have to be. What you need to know is that uPVC is a material that is rigid, durable and does not flex. The material has been used in windows and doors for decades now and there seems to be no rush to change.
uPVC doors usually come with multipoint locking for that added security and tend to be more affordable than their rival, composite doors.
Composite doors may be of a higher price range but there is a significant reason why; they are made from a range of different materials, which are pressed and glued together under high pressure conditions. They too, also offer a high level of security, one that is even higher than what uPVC can offer.
With a composite door, you can get the illusion of having a traditional wooden door without the cons of maintaining real wood.
For example, composite doors do not warp like wooden doors meaning there are no gaps for cold air to come through; save on energy bills whilst maintaining a look without the hassle.
Whilst maintaining a particular look is important so is maintaining the condition of your door. It is true that uPVC requires relatively low maintenance but there is a problem when there is absolutely no maintenance. Not treating a uPVC door can lead to discolouration, which is irreversible. Similarly, with composite doors, they too require little maintenance other than an occasional wipe down and oil on the hinges. However, they do provide the long-life span of roughly 35 years compared to the shorter 20-25 years of a UPVC door.
Both types of doors have desirable qualities that appeal to different people but the winning point on composite doors is the fact that they are just as durable and strong as uPVC but allow a wider range to choose from in terms of design. You can tailor a composite door to fit in with the design of your home; whether you are looking for a particular colour or finish, there will inevitably be one you like.
