Dawes and Green Awarded Contract to help Transform Historical Local Facade
Dawes and Green are delighted to have been awarded the contract to install a new shop front and lobby to the redevelopment and well known former Ravens Department Store, Southend-on-Sea, which is to be transformed into a high-end restaurant, café and bar featuring a new roof garden.
Originally founded in 1897, Ravens was owned by the Ravens family. A much loved high-end department store and was at the centre of a blossoming town. Unfortunately, the store closed its doors in October 2017 having spent 60 years at 6-7 Clifftown Road Its facade still stands proud in the town centre today.
Working with SkArchitects Ltd, Dawes and Green are excited to be part of this project and are looking forward to helping transform this once historic business and a prized ‘gem’ of Southend into another thriving business and give it a new lease of life to be enjoyed by all again.
“The proposal is sympathetic to the existing building and preserves its character within Clifftown area. It also creates a visually interesting and economically viable premises which will continue to serve the local community and visitors to Southend for many years to come.
The design provides for a quiet lounge bar in the basement, a café and bar area on the ground floor, fine dining restaurant on the first floor, and the roof garden, kitchen and staff areas on the second floor. The building will retain its active frontage along Clifftown Road and will continue as a well known and easily accessible local attraction and destination.
The construction phase is due to start this autumn with a completion planned for spring 2018.”
